How to Care for Your Skin After Laser Tattoo Removal

how long to keep bandage on after laser tattoo removal

If you’ve recently started laser tattoo removal treatments, it’s important to take proper care of your skin to minimize discomfort and potential side effects. Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the tattoo pigments with a laser, breaking them apart so that your body can naturally eliminate them over time. However, this process can cause some temporary side effects, including minor burns, blistering, itching, frosting, and swelling. Following the right aftercare instructions can help reduce or prevent these side effects and promote faster healing.

Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare Instructions

Immediately after your laser treatment, you may notice frosting, which is the rapid heating of the skin. This can cause gas or plasma to form, resulting in a whitening effect. Swelling and redness are also common right after the treatment. To alleviate discomfort, apply a cold compress to the area for the first 24 hours and take over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin) to reduce inflammation. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.

After the treatment, keep the treated area clean and dry while it heals. Leave the dressing applied to the area for 8 to 12 hours before removing it. Clean the area twice a day with mild soap and water, and gently pat it dry. Avoid picking, peeling, rubbing, or scratching the skin during the healing process. While blisters and scabs are normal side effects, refrain from popping or picking at them. If necessary, protect any blisters with a dry dressing. If the blisters start to ooze, apply a non-stick dressing and change it twice a day until the drainage stops. Neosporin can be applied to any tears or damaged areas. Shaving the treated area should be avoided until it is completely healed.

At TKTX Numbing Cream Store, we recommend using our aftercare ointment, Calm and Correct by Dermamedics. This soothing and healing serum should be applied twice a day for three days after your laser treatment. Once you remove the first dressing, keep the area open to the air and avoid using any bandages. Do not wear makeup, medicated cream, or lotions on the treated area for 48 hours, unless instructed otherwise. Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and participation in physical activities that cause excessive perspiration for two to seven days after treatment. Additionally, make sure to wear sunblock with an SPF of 25 or higher over the area for three months following the treatment.

Please contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • The area looks infected (honey-colored crusting/oozing or spreading redness)
  • Unusual discomfort or bleeding
  • Moderate to severe itching in the treated area or surrounding area
  • Any other complications develop

For extreme reactions such as moderate to severe facial swelling, a severe rash, or difficulty breathing, call 911 or go to the emergency department.
